Second grade loves buildings.  It may be because these students have the unique opportunity to travel to major cities and see famous monuments all over the world on a regular basis.  Life at an international school.  Discussions went from Burj Khalifa to Eiffel Tower to the Hagia Sophia, and then back again.  Pretty entertaining for a girl who never left North America until she was 35.

For this assignment, we first looked at cityscapes. We had previously learned about landscapes, so cityscapes seemed like a good idea.  Then we discussed architecture and city planning.  Then we got into some fun research opportunities by looking at the tallest buildings in the world, bridges, and statues.  We practiced drawing cityscapes to make sure we utilized the space on the paper properly.

Students learned how to create a wash using watercolors.  We also looked at how to create a sunset.  This was pretty challenging because the watercolor paper was fickle.  Very easy to overwater and tear it with the paint brush.  Students created their cityscape on black construction paper, cut it out carefully, and enlisted help from their good ‘ol art teacher for exacto knife magic on windows and unique fixtures.

The results are actually quite stunning.  I heard numerous comments from adults in the hallway about how framable these cityscapes are and how cool they look.  This project is a keeper.  For next year, I would like to put more emphasis on researching cities, famous buildings, and famous architects.  We never really look at architects in my class and we really should, the work they do is amazing.
