‘Cause Baby You’re a Firework!

The biggest secret in kindergarten art is revealed: watercolors on top of crayon is magic.  I’ve done this lesson for four years and kids in third grade still talk about it and do it during their free choice time.  I can’t blame them.  I love adding watercolors on top of crayons too.

For this lesson I simply start by having students make five to six dots in random spots on their paper.  Then we make short lines going out from the dot (and covering radial symmetry in the process) until the paper is filled with lines.  Then we cover it in black watercolor paint.  IMG_0101IMG_0108

When teaching this lesson I try to stress short lines.  Fluorescent crayons look fantastic with this.
