Kindergarten Kids Have Crazy Hair

We all know this.  These kids sure are cute, but sometimes when they come in, they look like they just rolled right out of bed.  I keep saying I’m going to do this one day, just roll out and show up to work, but then I realize I’m not cute.  Not at all.  And definitely not inthe morning.  I’d scare people.

Anyhoo, I read the kids this story:

Then I thought about a project I did with my sixth graders a few years ago, and about a roller coaster project I did with first grade.  I had students draw a self-portrait the bottom of the paper.  Then we reviewed different kinds of lines to make the hair.  I had them color in the spaces in between the lines to add interest and COLOR.

Strips of paper add a completely different dimension to this work.  This addition really helps strengthen muscles in hands and helps develop spatial awareness. The kids love looping papers, making accordion folds, and figuring out how to put lots of papers down in a small space.
